No. 242 Ilwaco Marina

Ilwaco Marina
MAP It

The quaint fishing town of Ilwaco is located on the north shore of Baker Bay where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean at the south end of the the Long Beach Peninsula. An important transport hub in its early years workers and vacationers would arrive on boats and ferries from cities east up the river and the take horse drawn carriages and later trains up the Long Beach Peninsula.
Ilwaco became well known as an excellent fishing location for Chinook Salmon by the late 19th century. Local soft spruce timber found around Black Lake north of Ilwaco supplied the wood for making shipping boxes for the fresh caught salmon.
There were over 500 permanent fish traps attached to pilings in the waters off Ilwaco until 1934 when the State of Washington in an attempt to prevent overfishing banned the use of Great Lake Style Fish traps.
While Ilwaco sits on a flat basin behind Baker Bay protected from storms and sea swells by the cliffs of Cape Disappointment the channel and waters leading into the Pacific Ocean are treacherous waters to navigate and the area is regarded as one of the dangerous river bars in the world. The shallow waters quickly turn turbulent as strong outgoing tides of the Columbia River meet head on with incoming Pacific Ocean swells producing waves reaching heights of 20-30 feet.
Over 230 vessels have sunk at the mouth of the Columbia River since the 1890, for that reason this body of water is also called the "Graveyard of the Pacific."
The importance of the waterway to commerce and fishing attracts a lot of boating activity heading out to Pacific Ocean past the Columbia River Bar. The inherent risks of navigating the sand bar just off the coast led the United States Coast Guard to establish its largest Search & Rescue Station in the Northwest. 50 crew members staff 9 SAR boats 24/7/365 and respond to over 200 calls a year for assistance. The majority of responses happen during the summer months when recreational fishermen arrive for salmon and bottom fishing and get into trouble.
The United States Coast Guard has a Motor Lifeboat School in Ilwaco to train crews for surf rescue operations.

No. 217 Grays Harbor Towering Lighthouse is also Washington States tallest and 3rd on the Pacific Northwest

Grays Harbor Lighthouse
1020 W Ocean Ave, Westport, WA 98595
Height: 107' (33 m)
First lit: 1898
http://www.westportmaritimemuseum.com/pricing-hours/

MAP IT:

The Grays Harbor Inlet is one of the few along Washington State's coastline to allow ocean going vessels to enter without having to sail up a difficult river or channel. The towns of Hoquiam, Westport and Aberdeen saw increased growth and revenue from the booming timber industry in the late 1800s. By 1880s a number of ships had wreck near the entrance to Grays harbor and local representatives headed to Washington to ask law makers for funds to construct a lighthouse to aid in navigation and protect their lumbar industry.
After 14 years of funding issues and construction delays the 107 foot brick and mortar lighthouse was built on a tract of land 400 feet from the break water. Over the past 100 years storms and sediment accretion from the jetty protruding from the entrance to Grays Harbor have deposited nearly 3000 feet of sand in front of the lighthouse. Currently Grays Harbor Lighthouse sits 4 blocks from the ocean hidden amongst the trees with only its light tower rising above the tree line.
There are 135 metal stair bolted to the brick interior which take depending on your fitness level about 10 minutes to ascend.
There is no fee to lighthouse grounds or gift shop but it will cost you $5 and some sweat to get to the top of the lighthouse.

No. 57 Edmonds Pier & Marina

Rating : 4 out 5
Distance from Seattle, WA : 17 miles
Reason to go:
Edmonds offers a small town feel right up against the shoreline of Puget Sound. It has views of Puget Sound and both the Olympic Mountains and Cascade Range. It is a port in the Washington State Ferries system. Currently, the only ferry from Edmonds is a run to Kingston, Washington.
There are many tiny shops dotting the streets around downtown from a cheese monger, fashion stores  to PBS's Rick Steves own Travel Shop .
Its a nice town to pick up a quick lunch and window shop, or grab an ice cream and head on down to the waterfront. Its pedestrian friendly with many crosswalks and 20mph speed restricted. On nice summer evenings and on the weekend it will get very crowded both downtown and in the surrounding parks. Arrive early or late to avoid the crowds of families coming out to go to food, art, jazz festivals  or just play on the beach.

No. 38 Log Boom Park, Kenmore Washington

Log Boom Park
61st Ave NE & NE 175th St
Kenmore, WA 98028

Log Boom Park is a 12-acre park with over 1200 feet of shorline located at the north end of Lake Washington. It features a public dock both used by fisherman and boaters and a children's play area on the west side. You can either park your car in the parking lot during open hours or walk, ride or skate along the burke gill man trail which and pause to catch your breath at the Tracey Owen Station at Log Boom Park. As you step onto the pier the first 30 feet or so has handrails but the rest of the pier is open with no handrails. So be careful where you step and keep an eye on small children and pets so they don't miss step and fall into the water. Walking out to the end of the pier is good place to watch Kenmore Air Floatplanes land & depart (you can read about Kenmore Air Harbor Here and book a flight on Kenmore Air HERE). Lots of birds including ducks, herands and eagles frequent the north shore of Lake Washington which you can all see from the shore or out on the pier. This spot is also a great place to fish or enjoy a dynamic sunset.
