No. 10 King Salmon Run at Sunrise Mukilteo, WA

There has been a string of nice weather days happening across the Seattle area. Making for bright blue and orange sunrises. I frequently check the tide levels around Seattle on my phone using TideApp (available on iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Web). This morning the tide was running out. I decided to get there and see how far out the water had gone.

No. 09 Planespotting, Dreamliner Certification Flight Boeing Field

Boeing Dreamliner H/B787 is now certified :) Headed down to KBFI to watch some planes take off to north over Georgetown. While I was on way to the airport I checked with Flightaware.com to see which aircraft were enroute or filed for departure. Among the departures were two Boeing 787 dreamliners. Since airplanes were landing to the north I parked along S. Hardy Street at the north end of Boeing Field and walked around the small hill looking for a clear shot down the runway.

No. 08 1954 Hat & Boots Oxbow Park Georgetown (Seattle)

Hat and Boots Park
Oxbow Park
6430 Corson Ave S, 98108

MAP IT

This is a famous landmark south of Seattle, originally part of a cowboy-themed gas station built in 1954 named "Premium Tex." The orange hat, 19 feet tall and 44 feet wide, sheltered the station office; the boots were Cowboys and Cowgirls bathrooms (the slightly smaller one was for the ladies). Its owners hoped to expand the gas station into a Western-themed shopping center named "Frontier Village," but the effort proved unsuccessful. The gas station closed in 1988, and Hat 'n' Boots sank into a period of decay and vandalism. Skateboarders cracked the brim of the Hat.
A local community council raised funds to help save Hat 'n' Boots, which in 2003 were moved to Oxbow Park in Seattle's Georgetown neighborhood, a half-residential, half-industrial section of the city. The Boots were restored to their original state in 2005. But the Hat remained a wire skeleton for years until its restoration was finally completed in 2010. There are plans in the works to have it house an interpretive exhibit on the history and meaning of the Hat 'n' Boots.

By the late `80`s it looked like trail`s end for the Hat n` Boots gas station. Then Georgetown residents saddled up to save the 'soul' of their community.

No. 07 Edmonds, Wa North of Seattle

Rating : 4 out 5
Distance from Seattle, WA : 17 miles
Reason to go:
Edmonds offers a small town feel right up against the shoreline of Puget Sound. It has views of Puget Sound and both the Olympic Mountains and Cascade Range. It is a port in the Washington State Ferries system. Currently, the only ferry from Edmonds is a run to Kingston, Washington.
There are many tiny shops dotting the streets around downtown from a cheese monger, fashion stores  to PBS's Rick Steves own Travel Shop .
Its a nice town to pick up a quick lunch and window shop, or grab an ice cream and head on down to the waterfront. Its pedestrian friendly with many crosswalks and 20mph speed restricted. On nice summer evenings and on the weekend it will get very crowded both downtown and in the surrounding parks. Arrive early or late to avoid the crowds of families coming out to go to food, art, jazz festivals  or just play on the beach.
