No. 214 Saturdays Scott Firefighter Team and Tandem Combat Challenge in Everett, Washington

Recap of Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge August 24th, 2013
Port of Everett
Everett, WA

Scott Firefighter Challenge Everett 2013
A brief morning drizzle started off the day in Snohomish County but by the start of the first Everett Firefighter Challenge the drizzle had stopped and the team, tandem and rally competition could begin.
Members of local Fire Departments, US Navy, Canada, Louisiana took part in the event.
Every year the Scott Firefighter Challenge hits the road with its carnival of trucks, equipemt and staff to over 20 cities. The competitors where in high spirits to show off their skills and speed on the obstacle course which includes obstacles they encounter every day of roll outs. Having been a Firefighter II and EMT-B, Unit Officer and 911 dispatcher for 8 years for my local volunteer fire department and city police back east it is still evident that the first responder community is alive and well no matter where you go in the US or abroad.
This being the first time the Scott Firefighter Challenge came to the Everett area may have been a reason that most of the crowds were made of family and friends of the competitors. The start of the Evergreen Fair, Boeing Gold Tournament along with the lack of word of mouth for this event kept attendance fairly low. So keep this event in mind for 2014 and come out and see your local Fire & EMS crews go head to head in individual, tandem and rally competitions on the 5 obstacle course which includes climbing a five-story tower in full tournout gear, dragging and hoisting a fire house, simulating forcible entry, racing around obstacles. The Firefighter Combat Challege motivates, identifies and celebrates America's "best of the best" firefighters.
See you next year. Here are some of today's burning faces

No. 151 Gum Wall

The Market Theater Gum Wall
1428 Post Alley, Seattle, WA 98101

MAP IT

Located on the north end of Post Alley, underneath Pike Place Market, sticks the growing city and touristy attraction of the Gum Wall. Things started to stick in the early 1990s, when people, irritated that they had to wait in line to get tickets to the Market Theater, stuck chewing gum on the wall. At first, they would use the gum to stick small coins to the wall, but in time, the tradition of the coins disappeared, and the gum remained.
Theater attendants scraped the Gum Wall twice, but gave up in 1999, when it became a certified tourist attraction of Seattle. Now it is filled with thousands of pieces of chewing gum, of any color imaginable. And, as the wall grows, the chewing gum art becomes more sophisticated. You’ll find names written with pieces of gum, and symbols like hearts or the peace sign.
But, the Seattle Gum Wall is also one of the germiest tourist destinations on Earth. In a ranking made by Trip Advisor, it came in second place, after Ireland’s Blarney Stone.

No. 142 Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market
1501 Pike Place
Seattle, WA 98101
website: http://pikeplacemarket.org/

 MAP IT

Among the most written and visited tourist sites in Seattle is the Pike Place Public Market. Established in 1907, the market is one of the longest operating markets in the United States. It receives over 10 million visitors a year. The multi-level market features fresh produce and meats on the upper level and over 200 other vendors through out the 9 acre complex selling artisan breads, cheeses and artwork.
Its popularity means that the market fills up very quickly with shoppers and tourists. There is limited parking through out the area so the best approach is to use public transportation, arrive or early or late in the evenings. It is a good place for street photography and people watching. The large crowds of people also attract the high prices of produce and meats. You can expect to pay 20% or more over the standard grocery chain, but then you are also paying for the atmospheric shopping experience. On the south end of the market you can see and hear the famous Pike Place Fish Market tossing seafood around in their "flying fish" stick.
