The supercarrier CVN-68 USS Nimitz, at nearly 1092 feet in length, has left Bremerton Naval Shipyard for exercises at sea before making its first trip to its new home port NAS Everett. It is set to arrive in Everett on Friday.
Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier have spent the past year completing painting, tiling, welding and updating electrical and other systems on the carrier while it has been docked at the naval shipyards in Bremerton.
The Nimitz, hull number 68, was commissioned in 1975 and homeported in Bremerton from 1987 to 1997. The carrier moved to San Diego, Calif., in November 2001. It called home until December 2010 when it returned to Bremerton. USS Nimitz is sheduled to be replaced by CVN79 USS John F. Kennedy in 2018.
