Everett, WA
MAP IT
Established in the 1890's the Evergreen Cemetery covers over 100 acres of rolling hills landscape dotted with many century-old plantings and
‘state champion’ trees in south Everett west of I-5 Interstate. Over 50,000 Puget Sound residence are buried here from prominent families, to important business founders, teachers, photographers, saloon owners, bankers, soldiers, and regular citizens.
Evergreen is also known for the
Rucker Mausoleum, a 30-foot Washington granite pyramid resting on a
stone-encased earthen plinth, designed by F.W. Ladd of Seattle and
constructed at a cost of $30,000. This mausoleum has a large door of Red
Beach granite from Maine. The chapel space inside is surmounted by a
large dome with four art glass windows, and at one time contained a gas
chandelier. There are 22 crypts, with fitted closures made of polished
Barre granite from Vermont. A large, seated bronze figure of Jane Rucker
once stood atop the doorway.
Many individuals interred in
Evergreen Cemetery connect Everett to
national news and events: approximately
150 veterans of the American Civil War,
four governors (from Washington,
Minnesota, and the Dakota Territories),
two United States Senators, and the
great-great-great grandmother of
President Barack Obama.
