Happy Holiday's

I'll be taking the next couple of weeks off from writing for pugetexposure.com, so I just wanted to wish you a very happy holiday season. I hope you get some time to relax and spend some time with your family.
And, if you asked Santa for any camera gear this year, then I hope it shows up under the tree ;)
It's been a great year for Puget Exposure. Our traffic continues to grow, and we're ready to kick off our second year
Although I won't be adding new material here I do plan on adding some tips and techniques for photography and travel on The Focus Point
and to FaceBook. So check those sites for continued updates

Vought F7U-3 CutlassThe Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour offers the only opportunity to tour a commercial jet assembly plant in North America. The center and tour are made possible through the collaboration of the Boeing Company, Future of Flight Foundation, Snohomish County Public Facilities District and the Snohomish County Airport/Paine Field.

Museum of Flight Restoration Center - Everett, WA
In addition to the Seattle campus, the Museum of Flight operates a 23,000 square foot Restoration Center at Paine Field/Snohomish County Airport in Everett, Washington. The center is home to approximately three dozen aircraft in varying states of restoration by the Museum's volunteer restorers. Each project is a labor of love, sometimes requiring several years to complete. A group of dedicated volunteers works to restore each aircraft to exhibition quality which will then become part of static display at the Boeing Field location.

No. 228 Birds of Skagit Valley Basin

It is time for another seasonal change. The fall colored leaves are falling to the ground and piling up in the driveway, the days are shorter and days increasingly colder and windy. Also traffic in and around shopping areas is increasing for the holiday shopping rush.
But us humans are not the only ones getting ready for a season change. Wildlife must prepare itself for the long winter as well. Around your home and in your neighborhood you may have noticed more squirrel activity and also some increased sighting of birds.
Washington State is an important stop for migrating bird species flying south for the winter.
The Skagit Valley Basin lies along the Pacific Flyaway path for migrating birds flying south to California and Mexico for the winter and return north for the breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska.

Spend some time around La Conner, Anacortes, Mount Vernon and Burlington farm lands and you will start to see more and more numbers of hawks, eagles, owls and other birds of prey as they arrive in Washington State.
Here are the first arrivals for the winter 2013-2014

No. 226 Mount Rainer Reflection Lakes

One of the most photographed areas of Mount Rainier is of its south face from Reflection Lakes. Anytime you can combine a mountain and wide spanning mountain lake you are bound to make a stunning landscape image. That is of course if the weather and clouds cooperate with the photographer. Thousands of snap shooters, smart phone photographers and amateur to pro photographers make the drive around the south side of Mount Rainier and stop at Reflection Lakes.
During summer the lake shore and hills sides are covered in colorful blooms of wildflowers. Reflection Lakes is closed to swimming and Fishing but nearby Louise Lake is open to fishing and wading.
For a successful image plan on shooting at sunrise and sunset during the summer and fall months.
Mount Rainier is so large and tall that is has its own weather pattern. Which can make taking a photograph tricky. Fast moving high winds can blow in clouds and also clear the south face in just a few minutes. Most photographers make multiple trips up and down the national park. If you have the time to spend a few hours in the park take a notepad with you and write notes about places, mile markers, and description of the trail, area for your Scouting Tips.
Mount Rainier National Park is so vast that you could spend years hiking the trails and revisiting spots during various times of the year and see Mount Rainier in different light every time.

No. 225 Places to Photograph around Seattle on a Rainy Day

The Emerald City would not be as green as she is without a little rain. Although Seattle is not the wettest or rainiest city, that title goes to Mobile, Alabama with nearly 5 feet of annual rainfall. Washington State does not make the list of "Rainiest Cities" until Olympia, WA takes spot No. 24.
We do have less total rain fall, but Seattle's location in the Pacific North West means it gets a lot of on shore weather from the pacific ocean colliding with cold front racing down from Canada that produce low fog, over cast and grey days. Which makes the city feel cooler, wetter during fall and winter.
You may have noticed that few people own an umbrella but they have a closets filled with all kinds of outdoor weather clothing to deal with the soggy mess. If you are not the type that likes to be outdoors during the winter time but still have the want and crave to take images during the winter here are some great options to go visit under a roof that offer great photography opportunities.

Pacific Science Center
When you visit Pacific Science Center's Tropical Butterfly House be prepared to enter a tropical oasis. You will be encouraged to lighten your load by leaving coats and bulky items behind at the entrance.
When you arrive at the door, one of the staff will greet you to facilitate your entrance into this special habitat. The facility features double doors to prevent butterflies from escaping and to maintain the tropical climate. Once inside help  preserve the health and beauty of our butterflies and the plants on which they depend by refraining from touching or disturbing them.
On your way out, be prepared to take a few moments at the exit helping us to prevent butterflies from escaping.

Tacoma, WA

Le May America's Car Museum  -  One of Tacoma's newest attractions in the developing Museum District is a great destination both for young and old motor heads. The museum is located next to the Tacoma dome and resembles an oblong entry that resembles a giant hood scoop to drivers passing by on I-5. The 4 level building houses 165,000 sq f of show floor for more than 350 cars, trucks and motorcycles from private owners, corporations and the private LeMay Collection, which is in the Guiness Book of World Records with more than 3,500 vehicles.

Museum of Glass - You can plan on spending 1 1/2 - 2hrs visiting the museum. The gallery portion isn't the largest I have seen about blown glass, but the quality and difficulty of the collection makes enjoyable. I would start off with the "Hot Shop." Inside the landmark Hot Shop dome is an amphitheater where you can sit and watch resident and visiting art glass blowers performing their craft live with narration. At the MOG they are making glass blown art, not 4 glass bottles a second, so depending on what the current piece will be the process from start to finish can take 30min to over an hour.

Future of Flight , Boeing Tour
The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour offers the only opportunity to tour a commercial jet assembly plant in North America. The center and tour are made possible through the collaboration of the Boeing Company, Future of Flight Foundation, Snohomish County Public Facilities District and the Snohomish County Airport/Paine Field.
Located approximately 25 miles north of Seattle, The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour is the only public tour of a commercial jet assembly plant in North America.

Museum of Flight Restoration Center
In addition to the Seattle campus, the Museum operates a Restoration Center at Paine Field/Snohomish County Airport in Everett, Washington. The center is home to approximately three dozen aircraft in varying states of restoration by the Museum's restorers. The public is welcome to visit the Restoration Center.

No. 224 Christine Falls Mount Rainier National Park

Mount Rainier National Park- South Slope

Christine Falls is a waterfall on Van Trump Creek in Mt Rainier National Park. The falls is a two tiered drop totaling 69 feet (21 m) feet high. The upper drop is 32 feet (9.8 m) high and the lower drop is 37-foot (11 m). The lower drop cascades under the Christine Falls Bridge which was built in 1928.
Christine Falls are located immediately next to SR 706, on Van Trump Creek, about 2 1/2 miles east of Cougar Rock campground, or about 3 1/2 miles west of Narada Falls. It's pretty obvious, due to the amount of people usually around the falls, the tight gorge next to the bridge and the sign on the far side of the bridge. A short path leads to good views upstream to the falls from a fenced overlook.

No. 223 Gold Bar's Hidden Gem Wallace Falls State Park

Wallace Falls State Park
Gold Bar, WA
MAP IT

Driving Directions:

From Everett follow US 2 for 28 miles east to the hamlet of Gold Bar. Just before milepost 28, turn left onto 1st Street (signed for Wallace Falls State Park). Pro-ceed for 0.4 mile to a four-way stop. Turn right onto May Creek Road and continue for 1.5 miles to Wallace Falls State Park and the trailhead (elev. 300 ft). Restrooms and water available at parking lot.
Wallace Falls, named after homesteaders Joe and Sarah Kwayaylsh members of the Skykomish tribe, is a 4,735 acre forest land on the western slope of the North Cascade Mountain range in Snohomish County. The park has three back country lakes, Jay Lake, Shaw Lake and Wallace Lake which are connected via the Wallace River. The river trickles, snakes, gurgles and plunges its way through the park until the valley basin.
Some where within the park there has to be a waterfall worth of a title right?
Well there are more than 9 waterfalls in the park. Some small some larger, some are running year round while others only run in late winter/early spring with the snowmelt run off.
The 4 falls that are more easily accessible can be found along the Woody Trail, a 2.3 mile / 3.7 km long dirt trail that is well maintained and well marked. After recent rain fall, the trail might be come very muddy and slippery in spots. There are numerous switch backs and steep inclines that have tall raised steps. At 6'1 I did not have much trouble navigating the steps and switch backs, but those shorter might have more difficulty with the high steps.
2.3 miles may not seem like much, just remember its 2.3 miles each way (5.6 miles round trip) and its up and down hill sides with incremental elevation gains of 500 feet in short distances. Proper footwear and good to better conditioning is required to make it a safe and enjoyable hike. We made Wallace Falls into a mid morning hike and returned to the trailhead in about 3 1/2 hours with stops along the way (see pictures below :)
