No. 293 Guide to Aviation Photography

A practical how-to guide to photographing aircraft for anyone
from air show enthusiasts to those aspiring to be professional aviation photographers. Simply defined, aviation photography is the taking photos of airplanes. But behind the scenes of this seemingly simple act are a number of critical elements: aircraft scheduling, lighting, spotting locations, diversions, and sometimes interactions with law enforcement officials. In this guide I will talk about finding locations suitable for photographing aircraft, the equipment I use, camera settings, basic photographic concepts and techniques and discuss basic aviation knowledge in order for you to improve your photography for years to come.

There are 86 pages and 73 images in 8 chapters covering everything from airport layout, camera gear, what to pack, how to find air shows, where to stand, different camera settings and techniques to help you improve your aviation photography.

Learn all about the development and improvements to the Focke-Wulf FW 190

The 2013 Free Fly Days offered by Paul Allen Flying Heritage Collection in Everett, WA came to a close on Saturday September 21st, 2013. The final flight featured WWII aircraft that have not shared the skies in nearly 70 years.
Flying Heritage Collections Focke-Wulf 190A-5 and IL-2 Shturmovik took part in Saturday's
"Air War over Russia" in Everett, Washington. During the 1940s both of these aircraft fought for air to air and air to ground dominance on the Eastern Front. The heavily armored Tank Buster IL-2 Shturmovik was Russia's Air to Ground platform to take on ground to air cannons, trains, supply routes and bridges. Flying low over the terrain and its ability to absorb numerous hits while sending rockets and shells down range made it a very successful aircraft.

Spitfire:
This aircraft: Allocated to the British-based Czech 312 Squadron on September 11, 1942, it was piloted by Squadron Leader Tomas Vybiral. On May 14, 1943, Vybiral led his squadron on a daring wave-top raid against enemy shipping at St. Peters Port, Guernsey. AR 614 was heavily damaged by flak, killing its wingman and narrowly missing Vybiral in the cockpit, but he was able to lead his squadron safely back to England.

Bf 109:
This aircraft: This Bf 109-E was manufactured in Germany and deployed in October 1939. Piloted by Eduard Hemmerling, it flew primarily over France. Hemmerling shot down a British Spitfire on July 7, 1940, while escorting Stuka dive-bombers that were attacking British ships in Dover harbor. Later that month he destroyed a British Blenheim bomber and another British plane. But his own aircraft was mortally wounded, and Hemmerling turned back toward France. His failing airplane crashed off the coast of Cap Blanc Nez, killing the 27-year-old pilot. In 1988, a man walking on the beach near Calais noticed a piece of metal sticking out of the sand -- the tip of this plane's wing.
