No. 281 Olympic Flight Museum Saturday Highlights

Olympic Flight Museum
7637 Old Highway 99 Southeast
Tumwater, WA
website: http://olympicairshow.com/

Saturday Highlights.
The sun came out Saturday for the 16th Annual Olympic Air Show and a variety of aircraft from R/C Planes, Helicopters, and Warbirds filled the skies above Olympic Flight Museum with low high speed passes and aerobatic maneuvers. A TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) over Olympia Airport means only Air Boss approved aircraft can enter the show box over Olympia Airport. This safety measure allows stunt pilots and aircraft to perform more aerial maneuvers such as loops, inverted and low passes that you won't see at other air shows.
Day 2 is Sunday June 15th Gates open at 9am.

Spitfire:
This aircraft: Allocated to the British-based Czech 312 Squadron on September 11, 1942, it was piloted by Squadron Leader Tomas Vybiral. On May 14, 1943, Vybiral led his squadron on a daring wave-top raid against enemy shipping at St. Peters Port, Guernsey. AR 614 was heavily damaged by flak, killing its wingman and narrowly missing Vybiral in the cockpit, but he was able to lead his squadron safely back to England.

Bf 109:
This aircraft: This Bf 109-E was manufactured in Germany and deployed in October 1939. Piloted by Eduard Hemmerling, it flew primarily over France. Hemmerling shot down a British Spitfire on July 7, 1940, while escorting Stuka dive-bombers that were attacking British ships in Dover harbor. Later that month he destroyed a British Blenheim bomber and another British plane. But his own aircraft was mortally wounded, and Hemmerling turned back toward France. His failing airplane crashed off the coast of Cap Blanc Nez, killing the 27-year-old pilot. In 1988, a man walking on the beach near Calais noticed a piece of metal sticking out of the sand -- the tip of this plane's wing.

A bright blue sky and warm temperatures accompanied today's Fly Day at Paine Field. Its hard to want to stay indoors with such a good weather briefing. And pilots and aircraft a like felt the same way. It was a busy day at KPAE. Current construction on Runway 34R/16L means that the western Runway 34L/16R is the only active runway for General Aviation, Flight Schools, Boeing Test Flights, NAS Whidbey F-18 Hornets and the Vintage aircraft housed at Paine Field. Amongst the GA traffic a few Boeing 787s, 777, 747s also returned from the wild blue yonder .
The Collings Foundation is in town over Father's Day Weekend which added to the resident aircraft buzzing the shoreline of Mukilteo which included B-17, B-25, B-25, P-51, P-51, P-47 and a Mig-29.
The next Fly Day will be on June 29th at 12pm featuring Hellcat and Zero for "Pacific Legends Day"

Father & Son Flight Demonstration Pilots Bud and Ross Granley took to the sky in the P-51D Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt and put on a very tight formation flight for 30 minutes.

No. 193 Plane Spotting at Paine Field 6/15/2013

During today's Fly Day at Paine Field hosted by Flying Heritage Collection there were war birds, general aviation and a few Boeing Jet arrivals into 34L. The east Runway 34R is closed for repairs and drainage upgrades so this makes the local pattern quit full on nice weekends with aircraft all over the skies. But that is not a bad thing. Mount Rainier also came out of the haze to provide a nice North West backdrop to the north flow arrivals.
