Everett, WA

Nishiyama Japanese
Nishiyama Gate Entrance

The Nishiyama Japanese Garden at Everett Community College represents a compressed world of mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, meadows and village. Access to the garden for self-guided tours is provided at no charge on days when EvCC classes are in session and on special occasions.
The garden has eleven primary elements, each with a quiet message of its own. These include entry gate, entry area, waterfall, stream, tea garden, rock garden, Tsubo garden, side gate, stone bridge, earthen bridge, Iwakuni wooden bridge, and stucco masonry wall with tiled roof enclosing the entire garden site.
The centerpiece of the garden is the "Iwakuni" footbridge made of wood salvaged from the famous landmark Kintai Bridge located in Everett’s Sister City - Iwakuni, Japan. The 330-year old Kintai Bridge is rebuilt periodically to maintain the integrity of the structure. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between The City of Everett and Iwakuni City, lumber from the 2001-2003 bridge reconstruction project was fashioned into a smaller bridge and donated to the college’s garden project.
The bridge was shipped from Iwakuni in pieces via container to Everett in late May 2003. Four carpenters from Iwakuni followed the bridge to Everett and assembled it over a five-day period using traditional Japanese bridge construction techniques. The same carpenters were also involved with the reconstruction of the larger Kintai Bridge in Japan. Kumetsugu Ebisaki, chief carpenter on the bridge project, is the eleventh generation of his family to work on the Kintai Bridge. The nails, spikes and bolts used in the bridge were made by the only artisan in Japan making them today and are guaranteed to last 1,000 years. The bridge is made of Hinoke cypress, Japanese pine, zelkova wood, and others.

Fremont Troll
Troll Ave N
 Seattle, WA

MAP IT

The Troll is a mixed media colossal statue, located on N. 36th Street at Troll Avenue N., under the north end of the George Washington Memorial Bridge (also known as the Aurora Bridge). It is clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle, as if it had just swiped it from the roadway above. The vehicle has a California license plate. The Troll was sculpted by four local artists: Steve Badanes, Will Martin, Donna Walter, and Ross Whitehead. He is interactive—visitors are encouraged to clamber on him or try to poke out his one good eye (a hubcap). The Troll is 5.5 m (18 ft) high, weighs 6,000 kg (13,000 lb), and is made of steel rebar, wire, and concrete.

No. 127 Historic Ships Wharf

Historic Ships Wharf at Lake Union Park

Lake Union Park
860 Terry Ave N
Seattle, WA

The Historic Ships Wharf, located behind the  old Naval Reserve Center, is home to several historic vessels that have been awarded National Landmark Status, including the steamer Virginia V, the tugboat Arthur Foss, the fireboat Duwamish, and the lightship Swiftsure.
The Historic Ships Wharf also hosts a steady stream of historic visiting vessels, from square riggers to schooners to workboats.

South Lake Union Park
The Arthur Foss, built in 1889, is one of the oldest wooden-hulled tugboats afloat in the United States. In 1898, in response to the Alaskan gold rush, she transported barges full of gold seeking miners and supplies up the Inside Passage. There are no other Alaskan Gold Rush vessels still operating today. She was cast by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie studio to play in its 1933 production Tugboat Annie. In World War II, Arthur Foss journeyed south to join the war effort. Before the Battle of Wake Island began in late 1941, she was the last vessel to get away. After the war, she served the economy of the Northwest by working in the timber industry.

Lightship 83, now called Swiftsure, was built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service as the Blunts Reef, California lightship. She is the oldest surviving example of an American lightship with its original marine steam engine. She weathered severe storms and heavy damage from ramming by a steam schooner during her first six years of service. She later rescued 155 survivors from a stranded coastal steamer. Sails were used to help keep her on station in the early years. Replaced at Blunts Reef in 1930, she became the San Francisco lightship. Swiftsure was decommissioned in 1960, after 56 years of continuous duty, and purchased by Northwest Seaport in 1966. The Swiftsure can be viewed at Lake Union Park in Seattle.
